Salomon was born in 1947 in the heart of the French Alps and the birthplace of modern alpinism. Driven by a passion for skiing and design innovation, Francois Salomon and his son George designed and perfected much of the first modern ski equipment. During the following 60 years, Salomon's commitment to innovative design and passion for mountain sports created a vast range of revolutionary new concepts in boots, skis and apparel and brought innovative solutions to footwear, apparel and equipment for hiking, adventure racing, mountaineering and trail running. Through performance-driven design, Salomon enhances mountain sports by converting new ideas into action and expanding the limits of possibility.
I have had several pairs of these and the higher ankle version. Great shoes! I was glad to snag a pair in my size for this low price.I believe Salomon is moving on to the Ultra 4 which explains the price being about $50 less than REI and others. If they have your size, snatch them up as you will not be disappointed.Just did an 11 mile moderate to difficult hike. These are an all day, high mileage shoe. Highly recommended!I ordered this brand a half size smaller than my hiking boots I use for backpacking since I planned on wearing these with regular socks only rather than the sock liners with wool or smart wool socks I use when I do more intense hiking. The shoes still fit, although a little more snug than I expected. I probably could have gone with the same size as my hiking boots, but the snugness is not what I would call too tight, it is actually about as tight as I would probably want them to be if I were actually hiking, which would prevent friction blisters. Since these are hiking shoes, I am 100% okay with this. Something else of note is that they are snug enough I do not need to tighten the quick lace for everyday wear. If I were needing to run or going on an actual hike or through very rough terrain I would pull the quick lace tight for what I would call "sport mode" to prevent my feet from slipping out. Even though they are quite snug, they do not hurt my feet and without tightening the quick lace they hold my feet well enough I am not concerned about them flying off, while still allowing me to put my feet in and take them out of the shoes with ease. They will probably become my go-to day hiking shoes rather than putting on my much larger and robust Salomon boots that require a good deal of effort lacing and tying. The convenience of these shoes is just so convenient when paired with their durability, waterproofness, and excellent traction. One downside to their traction is that they were designed for more natural surfaces, so when I walk on my newly sealed driveway with wet soles or while the driveway is wet, the shoes do feel like they have much less traction and could cause me to slip if I am being too reckless.Another addition to my review: I have used these shoes for a few months and most recently on more serious hikes. The shoes are still comfortable and sturdy. The shoelaces, some new-fangled design where you pull a small tab that pulls both laces (which are also very thin, more like a piece of nylon string), is NOT well designed. First, you can't just pull the tab, if you do, only the top part of the shoe gets tight, you have to also pull the lace farther down and then quickly pull the tab-thing to get the laces tight enough. Now you've got this tab thing with about 6-7 inches of lace flopping around. I've tried tucking it into the laces, into a small ribbon that runs the length of the tongue, under the tongue and in my sock. No matter where I tuck that little tab, it comes loose and pretty soon I'm stepping on it as I walk. There is no way to shorten that leftover lace. How long until it breaks altogether? I even thought of buying plain old laces, but the holes for this thin cord/string are only just big enough to fit that cord, real/actual shoe laces would not fit. I will wear these shoes a little while longer, but then also wait for another brand with "plain old shoelaces" to go on sale and then dump these. Sorry, Salomon. I love your running shoes but your hiking shoes not so much.Additional: i finally understand how the laces are supposed to work, but the design is faulty. The diagram with instructions shows a band that goes cross-wise where you are supposed to tuck in the leftover lace but the shoe itself has a band that runs up the center of the tongue, not cross-wise. So there isn’t that band to tuck in the lace in the manner shown. Thumbs down again (or still).I don’t understand the lace they used on this shoe. It’s a single “pull” thing with some kind of clamp. As near as I can tell I then have to shove the lace ends into the shoes so they don’t flop around on the outside. Thumbs down.GREAT shoe, light weight and sturdy! No post hike back issues. believe the other reviews when they say to order a full size larger than usual.Third pair. They last about a year of heavy use. Soles wear flat if worn on anything other than trails. Absolutlely love the fit/function. I actually have an extra pair ready to go when these wear out--love them.I'm all about Salomon and these ones live up to the name.I haven't worn them yet. I just walked around the house. But the shoe fits well and is very comfortable. These are the sixth pair of this style of Salomon shoe that I have owned since 2008 and I cannot fault them at all.Lightweight, robust, waterproof, functional, well made are a handful of words and phrases that I consistently use when asked about them.I am normally a UK size 9 but have gone for a size bigger as I've learned over the years that they are quite a neat fit.In relation to this specific pair, they tick all of the boxes in terms of quality, comfort and style. A slightly different colour than what has been available in previous years but I've found they go well with jeans as well as walking gear.an alle die vor haben den schuh entwedera) im Winter bei Schnee (wenig getestet)b) auf rutschigem Terrain (ausgiebig getestet)c) beim klettern oder bei canyoning (beides ausgiebig getestet)verwenden wollen: KAUFT DIESEN SCHUH NICHT! The shoes failed after just a couple of months use. The materials chosen do not seem robust or hard wearing. The Gortex waterproofing was good to start with but also not long lastingI read nice reviews about this product and didn't bother much about price as I thought they will last. However after just one month this the status of the shoes. It's just marketing and high prices. My last shoes before this were for 20 or 15 Euro and lasted for 2 years and half wearing them most of the time. Not the most comfortable on the market but they provide good support, grip, waterproofing and I really like the speed lace system
