Giro Empire E70 knit. The knitting technique is already known for its use in sports shoes. However, it is new in cycling, because cycling shoes require a mixture of supple comfort and stable performance that other sports shoes cannot offer. The Empire E70 Knit is made from our patented Xnetic Knit outer material, which thanks to a frame made of thermoplastic polyurethane as well as a nylon core provides optimal kicking support and power transmission. The sock-like comfort and good ventilation are other features that will quickly become a fan of the Empire E70 KNIT. DWR treatment makes the upper water resistant and easy to clean, while the reinforced toe and heel areas ensure increased durability and abrasion resistance. In combination with the Easton carbon fibre sole, the Empire E70 Knit is an incredibly powerful combination and stands for progress in cycling shoe design. Upper material/shaft: Xnetic knit with connected TPU skeleton support structure, TPU reinforced toe cap and heel, DWR treated, retaining loop for laces, closure system: lacing sole: Easton EC70 carbon fibre compound, thread inserts made of stainless steel, replaceable shoe heel footbed: moulded EVA foot bed with medium arch support PEDAL. System: 3-hole Delta pedal system (look) compatible weight: 250 g (size 42, 5) sizes: 39-50, as well as half sizes from 42, 5-45, 5 areas of use: racing bike.
Was a little nervous trying out a much less expensive and much less technical shoe compared to my other pairs but I've wanted to try a pair of the Giro's for a while after consistent positive feedback online, cyclist I know, and so on. So rather than go the usual route spending $200 - $300+ on a pair, I went with these and am happy to report that they are extremely comfortable.Typically I cannot get my adjustments 'quite right' with only Velcro (or buckle which these don't have), so I usually opt for a BOA closure. I was surprised by the excellent fit and ability to cinch them down perfectly. I also like the fact that the tongue of the shoe comes up a bit on the front of my ankle. Many other shoes do not do this and that material, even after a good break-in, can be very annoying or worse, create a bit of a pressure point. The only real issue I had was that I was getting a bit of a 'hot spot' in my left shoe. Admittedly I was in a rush and set the cleat up identical to another shoe I used often. After a couple minor adjustments it improved, then once back home doing my usual / proper (for me anyway) cleat positioning, then doing two trainer rides (only 30 min and 40 min) there were no hot spots. The next test was an outside ride, granted a short one of just under 20 miles and no hot spot (before I began to feel it creeping on within 10 miles or so).So with that, I think these are going to be a great addition to my growing collection of cycling gear. I also really like the color, whether it actually does help distracted drivers or not (no where does Giro or anyone claim this that I know of) but combined with a CRAZY bright flashing red frame tail light, bright socks and reasonably bright gear, these help to give me the feeling of a little more security that I'm more easily seen.
